The Growl bassist attacked; loses use of hand

Posted in Australian Artists, News with tags , , on February 4, 2014 by keelykov

Perth band The Growl have issued a statement regarding bassist Marc Earley’s unprovoked attack in Sydney on Monday morning.

Earley, who was attacked at 3 am on Monday the 2nd Feb at Oportos on the corner of Oxford St, suffered fractures in his left hand, rendering him unable to continue with his current bass duties.

The attack comes after Sydney introduced controversial venue laws in the vicinity, though the statement insists the attacked did not seem to be under the influence of alcohol or any other substances.

The Growl, who are currently touring the country with Laneway Festival, will honor the rest of the dates with Nick Allbrook of Pond taking the reins.

To try and help with Earley’s medical expenses and loss of income, The Growl are currently crowd funding. You can donate to this cause here.

Read the full statement from the band below:

Around 3am on Monday morning the 2nd of February Marc Earley the bass player for The Growl was the victim of an unprovoked assault at an Oporto restaurant near the corner of Pelican and Oxford St in Surry Hills. The attacker, who did not appear to be intoxicated or under the influence, blinded him with one hand whilst intentionally breaking the ring finger on Marc’s left hand at a right angle, causing two fractures on the upper knuckle.

The Doctors at the emergency department at the Prince of Wales Hospital have told us that Marc must have surgery within 48 hours from a specialist to achieve any kind of full recovery which will allow Marc to continue his life as a working musician. He has flown home to Perth for emergency surgery and to begin the rehabilitation process.

As well as being an integral member of The Growl, a widely respected upright bassist in the Australian jazz community and a mentor and role model to the students he teaches, Marc has committed most of his life the past few years creating a reputation as an incredibly gifted film scorer.

Not only has this act of unprovoked violence caused Marc a lot of pain and distress it will severely impact his livelihood in the coming months. Marc will have to attend occupational therapy everyday after his surgery if he is to regain the full use of his hand.

Any of you who know Marc, know him for the gentle, friendly and ever laughing bloke he is and didn’t deserve any of this.

Being a week to week working musician Marc doesn’t have health or income insurance. If you can spare anything to help Marc make a full recovery and get through this tough spot a donation would be so appreciated. His hands are his life.

To date no one has been charged, police are currently going through CCTV footage and investigating the incident.

The Growl wish Marc a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing his fingers and big smile back in action soon.

The band will play the remaining St Jeromes’ Laneway Festival shows with Nick Allbrook (Pond) taking over bass duties for Marc.

The world’s best band* The Gaslight Anthem, premiered their new single 45 on Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 on BBC1 last night… and it’s a freaking miracle.

The first single to be taken from their fourth studio album Handwritten, which will hit shelves July24th, 45 combined the melodic styling of American Slang with the heart wrenching tales of youth present on Sink Or Swim.

In short, this track is totes amazeballs. Seriously though. It’s incredible.

Gotye scores US #1

Posted in Australian Artists, News with tags , on April 19, 2012 by keelykov

Gotye – aka Wally De Backer – has reached the unreachable this week, becoming the first Australian artist this century to have a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart .

The Melbournian is in pretty good company, with the only other Aussies to have reached number 1 in the USA int he past 3 decades being Men At Work, INXS and Savage Garden.

The big number 1 was hit with his track Somebody That I Used to Know (feat. Kimbra)‘. The single recently featured on a n episode of Glee which significantly bolstered sales (those darn GLEEKS!)

Gotye’s single has now accrued over 5 million sales worldwide with over 500,000 copies sold in the U.S. last week alone. In fact “Somebody That I Used To Know” is only the sixth song in American chart history to sell more than half a million downloads in just one week.

The song has now been #1 on iTunes in 33 countries – MENTAL!

The new video from Melbourne’s The Temper Trap is ass-kickingly awesome.

The immediate and uplifting anthem ‘Need Your Love‘ is set to a tale of triumph, tribulations and 80’s Bromance.

Picking up where Karate Kid leaves off, ‘Need Your Love’ proves that Johnny isnt as bad as he seemed and Mr Miyagi was, is and will always be a total boss.

CD Review: DZ Deathrays – Bloodstreams

Posted in Australian Artists, CD, New releases, News, Reviews with tags , , on April 10, 2012 by keelykov

DZ Deathrays - Bloodstreams

A couple of lords from Brisbane made a band. They called themselves DZ Deathrays. They went overseas and sunk some piss. They came back. They released their debut album ‘Bloodstreams’. All our faces melted off.

With epileptic fit frantic highs and super chilled mellow lows, ‘Bloodstreams’ isn’t afraid to show all the shapes that DZ Deathrays can pull.

Shall we walk through the album together?

  1. Bloodstreams: Intro track, don’t get lulled into a false sense of security; they are just joshing with you.
  2. Teenage Kickstarts: Ah there you are. This is classic DZ. Aussie accent sounding through the dying cat screams and the driving drums. Brilliant.
  3. Dollar Chills: Bringing it down a bit, the pulsating Dollar Chills is scathing against pretentious dicks in a super fun way. A nice recovery before…
  4. Dinomight: And it’s true. A dino just might. This track is one of the most solid on the record, both lyrically and musically with shifting focus between the tune’s light and dark.
  5. Play Dead Till You’re Dead: I used to have a cat that played dead. She was pretty crap at it. This song isn’t crap at it – it’s very good at it. Another slower tempo track with some nice sing along ‘Ahh ah ahh’s’ and a fine vocal performance by Shane Parsons. Could this be a future single?
  6. Cops Capacity: A track written after the infamous Brisbane police shut down a show that “The Greatest DJ in the world” was playing. What’s illegal is how good this track is. If you’ve seen the Dee Zeds live before, you will for sure recognise this little clanger.
  7. Brains: A little vocal strain and a trainspotting memory later and we have Brains. Drum heavy, scream heavy, dance your ass off heavy.
  8. Gebbie St: A slow burning experiment for the duo. Sexy, driving and laced with bongos, Gebbie St ticks all the boxes and makes the right conversation.
  9. No Sleep: What is sure to be a party anthem, No Sleep already kills everything else that is awesome with its super awesome film clip. It only has Arj Barker in it! Rad.
  10. Debt Death: I had to listen to this song twice, ‘cause I started reading an article about Lady Gaga’s arse. True story. However, this track is super rad. It is like a crazy world destroying volcano and Joy division had a baby, and that baby was like, hey man, wanna start a band?
  11. Dumb It Down: I’m going to put it out there… this is my favourite track on the album. It has an 80’s feel about it which I just can’t go past, and the vocals are just so different to the rest of the album. Plus, the hook is epic.
  12. L.A. Lightning:  I freaken love it when a riff sounds like a second vocalist. And R2D2 at the same time.
  13. Trans Am: Last track on the album, with a softer intro overlayed with some nice feedback.. I’m loving the post punk influences that are poking out all over this album and Trans Am takes that to the next level. An absolute miracle of a song…. Oop SECRET TRACK! I remember when I had a Backstreet Boys album, and they had a secret track. That was pretty good, but this is better.

Well kids, there was the entire Bloodstreams album. I’m blown away by how much this band has grown from the little tiny seeds of potential they used to be. So listen to this album loud and on repeat and raise a drink to the kings of thrash party. In the words of L.J. Hooker, nobody does it better.

Get your hands on a copy of the album, and check them out on their Bloodstreams tour.

M83 announce ‘Reunion’ EP

M83 will release the ‘Reunion’ EP on 7th May 2012 through Pod, the second single to be taken from the hugely acclaimed fourth album ‘Hurry Up We’re Dreaming’.

As well as entering the top 40 in the UK charts for the first time, the double album hit number 15 in the US Billboard charts and topped the electronic and alternative charts. Named Pitchfork’s #1 single of 2011, “Midnight City” is nowcertified Gold in Australia, has had over 8 million hits on YouTube to date, was voted #5 in the 2011 triple j hottest 100and remains one of the biggest club tracks of the moment across the world thanks to the Eric Prydz rework.

M83 will also take part in Record Store Day on April 21st this year, with a limited edition vinyl 7” featuring the hidden album track “Mirror”.  The release will be available as part of a very limited run in Australia.

With the release of ‘Reunion’, the rise and rise of Anthony Gonzalez’s M83 is set to continue. ‘Reunion’ continues to display M83’s aptitude at writing catchy cosmic-pop soundtracks filled with fantasy and imagination. The single will be released with a stunning and diverse remix package of 6 exclusive re-works of the track. Remixes come from Mylo, Sei A, The Naked And Famous, Polly Scattergood, We Have Band and White Sea. A video for “Reunion”, which is a sequel to the “Midnight City” video, will be released in coming months.

Mylo leads the ‘Reunion’ remix charge with his trademark funky synth bass lines and beats cleverly weaved into the spaced out original vocal track to create a contradiction of sounds and another potential hit for M83.

Sei A, the up and coming Glasgow based producer, is hailed as one of the most exciting producers in the techno-house scene, and has given ‘Reunion’ a glimpse of Glaswegian industrialism through his loop filled minimalistic mix. The White Sea remix is a spaced out dubstep nugget, whilst The Naked And Famous take an altogether different route with their rework by building the track into an electronic cacophony of synths, guitars and drums, much the way M83 do performing live.

Tracklisting is as follows:

1. Reunion (Original Version)
2. Reunion (The Naked and Famous Remix)
3. Reunion (Sei A Remix)
4. Reunion (Polly Scattergood Remix)
5. Reunion (We Have Band Remix)
6. Reunion (Mylo Remix)
7. Reunion (White Sea Remix)
