APRA Song of the Year nominees announced

Nominees for the highly coveted APRA Song Of The Year Award have been announced, pitting new generation artists against Australian music staples.

Including an Idol winner, APRA winners and Hottest 100 winners, the competition for the Song Of The Year gong is tougher than ever, however, a novelty remix still managed to find its way into the list – Pendulum’s ‘ABC TV News Theme (remix)’ .

While we admit the remix is a bangin’ tune and one of our favourite tracks from last year, it still seems like an odd inclusion alongside the likes of the late Rowland S Howard and Kasey Chambers.

One other issue with the announced nominees is that no Urban artists have made the cut this year – even though huge tracks were released from Aussie favourites Bliss N Eso and Drapht.

Along with the APRA Song Of The Year, this years’ awards will also include categories for Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Most Played Australian Work, Most Played Australian Work Overseas, International Work of the Year, Country Work of the Year, Blues & Roots Work of the Year, Urban Work of the Year, Dance Work of the Year and Rock Work of the Year.

The winners will be announced at the APRA Awards on Tuesday June 21 at Sydney’s Carriageworks complex.

Coachella 2011 line up announced

Holy galvanized steel Batman – this year’s Coachella line up is off the proverbial hook!

The three day festival held in Indio California from 15^th-17^th April 2011 will be host to some of the best damn indie artists gracing our radio at present. Want proof? Check out the mammoth line up poster!

So while the headliners are pretty good (or fucking awesome in Arcade Fire’s case) it’s the tail end that really gets my heart a-racin’. Bright Eyes, a reformed Death From Above 1979, Cold War Kids, Delta Spirit, Tallest Man On Earth, Mariachi El Bronx, Freelance Whales & The Strokes put the rad in radical.

Australia has made a pretty decent contribution to the line up this year with Cut Copy, Tame Impala, Gypsy & The Cat, Empire Of the Sun, The Presets & Angus & Julia Stone all representing the Green and Gold.

Falls Festival 2010 line up announced

Oh my it’s started! Festivals are releasing their line ups left right and centre with Falls Music & Arts Festival 2010 the next cab off the rank.

The New Year’s festival which is held over 3 days from December 29, 2010 in Marion Bay Tasmania, and 4 days from December 28, 2010 in Lorne, Victoria, will feature around 60 performers, comedians, The Falls Arts Village, films, natural amphitheatres and FREE CAMPING. Yep free.

Headlining this years’ event will be US lads Interpol and the queen of rock Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. Other internationals also on the bill are The National, Public Enemy, Klaxons, Cold War Kids, Sleigh Bells and The Soft Pack.

Leading the way for Australia are Angus & Julia Stone, Tame Impala, Beautiful Girls, Cloud Control and Washington.

Peats Ridge Festival announces first line up

Peats Ridge Festival has announced it’s musical first line up and it seems that there will be something for everyone this New Years.

Taking place Dec 29 to Jan 1 in Glenworth Valley, NSW, Peats Ride will see Australian folk darlings Angus & Julia Stone headline alongside Boise’s own Built To Spill and Swedish Shout Out Louds.

Soul fiends The Dynamites, pop darling Kate Miller-Heidke and the newly re-named PVT also feature on a bill that sees everything from Dance to Hip Hop to Reggae featured.

The Go-Between Bridge Concert brings all the boys to the yard

Come Friday June 25th, Brisbane will not only have a new bridge to entertain their feet, but they will also have a humdinger of a live show to entertain the rest of their body.

The Go-Between Bridge Concert will see national and local bands take the stage, right on top of the new Go Between Bridge to celebrate the structures launch.

Joining in the Bridge over not-so-troubled water festivities, will be Angus & Julia Stone, Robert Forster (The Go-Betweens), Josh Pyke , Bob Evans, Yves Klein Blue & John Steel Singers.

The Go-Betweens are considered one of Australia’s most artistically successful and influential rock groups of the ’80s and Forster has let slip that he will be inviting friends to join him on stage to play and celebrate some of the classic Go-Between’s tracks.

“The naming of this magnificent new bridge in connection to The Go-Betweens is an honour for the group, and something I am personally very proud of,” explains Forster.

All proceeds from the sale of the tickets will go to two charities selected by Brisbane City Council; The Kim Walters Choices Programme from the Wesley Hospital and the Mater Foundation Prostrate Cancer Research Centre.

Angus & Julia Stone take Down The Way on tour

After a cheeky stint OS, Angus & Julia Stone return home in July to play the Splendour in The Grass festival, which will be followed by their biggest Australian tour to date through August/September in support of their new album Down The Way.

The tour will kick off in far North Queensland and take in all capital cities before winding up in Brisbane.

Tickets are on sale Friday, May 7 along with the new single ‘Big Jet Plane’, which includes three previously unreleased b-sides; the Julia track ‘Living On A Rainbow’ along with a cover of ‘You’re The One That I Want’ and Angus’ stripped back ‘My Malakai’.
