Cabins Tour

Oh yeah boy! Sydney four piece Cabins have announced their first headlining east coast Australian tour in support of their debut mini album Bright Victory.

Lost In Suburbia reviewer Suze Peak said the following of Cabin’s debut album:

“There are several words widely used to describe the Sydney based four piece, Cabins. Dark, moody & melodic offer obvious choices but also describe a mass of unforgiving generic bands, to which Cabins have seemingly saluted the metaphorical middle finger. Their debut mini album ‘Bright Victory‘ unleashes a real sense of broodiness in a bombshell that’s packed full of intensity… From one moment to the next this album is a delight for the musical senses.”

Joining the lads on tour will be  STEP-PANTHER as main support.

CD review: Cabins – Bright Victory

Posted in Australian Artists, CD, Reviews with tags on June 9, 2010 by keelykov

Cabins - Bright Victory There are several words widely used to describe the Sydney based four piece, Cabins. Dark, moody & melodic offer obvious choices but also describe a mass of     unforgiving generic bands, to which Cabins have seemingly saluted the metaphorical middle finger.

Their debut mini album ‘Bright Victory‘ unleashes a real sense of broodiness in a bombshell that’s packed full of intensity, it’s no wonder Ivy League Records have snapped up these boys, a credit to the four talented muso’s; Leroy – Vocals/Guitar/Keys, Dan – Vocals/Guitar, Christopher – Bass and Brin – Drums.

Opening track ‘Hounds‘ starts things off with an intense pounding of drum, guitar and bass. In enters the surprising delight that are Leroy’s vocals, creating that brooding sound. His voice is deep, haunting, oozing confidence and yes ladies, it’s sexy.

With an atmospheric guitar, added layers of instruments, including horns, building to an impressive finale, Hounds is certainly one of the stand out tracks of the album.

Oceanic Blues‘ is beautifully haunting with a combination of acoustic guitar melodies and percussion. Once again Vocals lend to a blissfully obscure sound Cabins is creating. Lyrical content is an enigmatic celebration throughout this album that adds perfect mystery and an effortless feeling of depth.

Displaying craft and skill at blending guitar with a beautiful key melody and gritty vocals, is the newly released single, ‘Catcher In The Rye‘. The keyboards feature heavily on this track and by the bum end of the song you’ve been prepared for a crescendo of controlled chaos and brutal beauty.

The band has a vast repertoire, specifically explored and demonstrated in the tracks ‘Mary‘ and ‘Father Ripper‘, with fantastic touches of 70’s-esque guitar riff, drum and bass giving the listener a little more gusto and RPM for your penny and an invitation to get down and jiggy.

The Moon offering lone guitar and vocals into an explosion of drum, distortion and horns. This track is theatrical and dramatic while remaining splendidly understated. And while Foes & Thieves brings a vocal melody into a flowing guitar that’s completely intoxicating, you’re suddenly thrown an upbeat chorus which induces moments of toe tapping. Closing track, ‘Calling You Home‘, encompasses all that is great about Cabins; Unassuming and provoking.

‘Bright Victory’ is accomplished for a debut. From one moment to the next this album is a delight for the musical senses.

Bright Victory‘ available through Ivy league and MGM Distribution June 11th.

Mess Hall tour For The Birds

Posted in Australian Artists, Gigs, Tours with tags , , on January 11, 2010 by keelykov

Australia’s premier exponents of cinematic soundscapes and loose-limbed glam stomp, The Mess Hall are pleased to announce that they will embark upon a national tour, their first in support of their new and critically acclaimed album, “For The Birdsthroughout March.

‘For The Birds’ is a record that sees The Mess Hall heading towards a new kind of beatnik soul that is very much their own.  Every song is infused with a gritty kind of beauty, a surfeit of swing and sense of experimentation that is a natural progression from everything they achieved on their previous release, ‘Devils Elbow’ (winner of the Australian Music Prize in 2007). ‘For The Birds’ sets the band apart as one who create their own world and fill it with narratives of the broken, the forgotten, the misunderstood, and very occasionally, the redeemed, and here those themes are refined and expanded upon.  Keen wireless, television and internet aficionados will already be familiar with the fuzzed out funk of ‘Bell’ (with its startling accompanying video featuring Minister Terry Durham) and the glockenspiel and guitar rollick of ‘Tijuana 500’ from the hit parade, and understand that this is a band setting their own agenda and marching to the beat of their own drum.

Where ‘For The Birds’ departs from The Mess Hall‘s previous recorded works is in the scope of its musical ambition and the band’s willingness to experiment.  The most noticeable change comes in the band’s desire to play with a newfound sense of swing that owes a debt of gratitude to the great jazz players of a bygone era, whilst the live show still retains the raw power for which the band has become so highly regarded. Equal parts soul revue, rock and roll sledgehammer, and real-time live soundtrack, The Mess Hall concert experience is a wonder to behold. To miss it would be simply ridiculous.

The band are delighted to be joined by two of Australia’s finest and most original bands,  Bridezilla and Cabins, ensuring that the term “get there early” has never been more appropriate.

Bridezilla need very little by way of introduction, having astonished audiences since their earliest shows with their entirely unique, evocative sounds. Comprising the less than standard line up of sax, violin, two guitars and drums, and featuring the amazing vocal talents of Ms Holiday Sidewinder, this will be their first national tour since the release of their extraordinary debut album “The First Dance”.

Opening all shows will be one of the country’s most exciting new acts, Cabins, who have started to create a serious online buzz with their track “Hounds”, and a compelling live show that belies their tender years. Lying somewhere between Tom Waits, Happy Mondays and Velvet Underground, their music is difficult to classify, other than to say, it’s darkly melodic, spiky and very much their own.

With a line-up of such quality, The Mess Hall’s “For The Birds” March tour will be one of the tour events of 2010. Yes it will.
