New Video: Last Dinosaurs – Time & Place

The beautifully shot video for Time & Place pits Brissy’s Last Dinosaurs against Andy Goldsworthy for the title of Ephemeral artist extraordinaire!

Time & Place, which isn’t linear in any sense but does have an amazingly awesome Dog/Bear in it, juxtaposes the natural Australian bush with the electronic revolution.

Splendour In The Grass 2011 line up leaked?

Splendour In The Grass line up fake?

Is this the greatest line up to grace our fair country, or is this just some jerk with photoshopping skillz trying to make us cry? I’m kind of going to have to side with the latter.

The camera phone picture of the alleged Splendour 2011 line up was posted by user Sneaker1010 on FasterLouder’s Unofficial Splendour In The Grass forum.

With the picture, Sneaker1010 said:

“in my friend’s office, who is in same building as designers of this year’s splendour artwork + website. i have seen the 80% lineup confirmed and tried to take a picture.

i will def get in trouble for this: eek:”

For those who can’t read good, Splendour 2011 “Line Up”:

Radiohead
Arcade Fire
Kanye West
The Cure
Sonic Youth
Fleet Foxes
Arctic Monkeys
The Avalanches
The Decemberists
The Presets
Weezer
P.J Harvey
The Church
Santigold
Robyn
Missy Higgins
Foster The People
The Black Keys
Bag Raiders
The Jezabels
Itch-e and Scratch-e
Tim and Jean
Big Scary
Seekae
Oh Mercy
The Chemist
Guineafowl
Snowman
The Holidays
Jinja Safari
Wagons
Paul Simon
Pnau
The Living End
The Hives
Birds of Tokyo
Battles
Expatriate
The Honey Month
Seagull
Ball Park Music
M83
Gotye
Grace Woodroofe
Elbow
Ellie Goulding
The Panics
Janelle Monae
The Vacines
Royskop
The Grates
Surfer Blood
Drapht
Grouplove
Tennis
James Blake
Panda Bear
Freelance Whales
Akron/Family
Sparkadia
Delta Spirit
The Naked & Famous
Esben & The Witch
+ more to be announced

Yeah – A little ridiculous. But if it’s true it’s amazing. There is some merit to this though, as there is a heavy quota of Dew Process bands on the bill, like Delta Spirit, Grouplove & Freelance Whales, all who one would expect to populate the actual line up. I don’t know, Paul Simon and Kanye on the same bill? I’d say someone is on crack – Or it’s mock text.

What do you think?

Addition: Yep; it’s a fake. Promoters have denied the poster’s better-than-an-orgasm claims and even poked fun at its less than awesome design.

Promoters said in a statment:

“Aside from the alleged artwork looking terrible, at this point in time those speculating on line up have got it way wrong.”

Interview: Guineafowl flying the coop

GUINEAFOWL

Sydney upstarts Guineafowl are about to release their new EP and head out on their first major headline tour. But before they set out, the mysteriously named front-man – Guineafowl – caught up for a chat with Lost In Suburbia.

Lost In Suburbia: Congrats on your new EP ‘Hello Anxiety’. What’s the feedback been like so far?

Guineafowl: We have been keeping the EP pretty close to the chest thus far. But those have heard it have been very positive. My Mum in particular really likes it!

LIS: Which track is the standout for you on the EP?

GF: They are all stand outs! Ok, that’s just arrogant. I listened to a track called “My Lonely Arms” probably the most out of the five when we finished recording the EP. But it is pretty hard for me to name a standout, musicians always say “ah that’s like naming your favourite child” but I disagree. It would be much much easier to name your favourite child.

LIS: Some of the tracks on the EP are quite old – such as the Botanist – which was released in 2009, how long has the EP been in the works?

GF: It was released at the end of 2009 so not that old! Another song, Mothr is from the same period as Botanist, the other three tracks were written/finished throughout 2010. So by the time we ready to record in September we had been about for about 10 months.

LIS: You’re about to hit the road for the EP launch, why should people go along to the shows?

GF: We have not headlined a tour before, and only played two headline shows, both in Sydney, so these EP shows are going to have an energy that we haven’t really presented to many people. Aside from that, in addition to performing the tracks on the EP we are showing some brand new material. And In general we are working extremely hard to make these shows our best yet. A lot of late nights.

LIS: Explain how Guineafowl evolved from a solo project to its current incarnation.

GF: I played a few shows on my own, using a loop pedal to try and produce all the parts I had been writing live. It was kinda terrible so forming a band was a necessity. Some friends of mine had heard the demos and were pretty keen to start playing. Our band happened very organically, we just grew to a six piece.

LIS: How did you guys hook up with Dew Process?

GF: They approached us reasonably early, before the band had starting hitting their strides and were keen to help us and give us a little guidance. That is what is so attractive about Dew Process, aside from being a great label, they are real experts and that is endlessly important to us.

LIS: You’ve just won a SMAC award for best Sydney song for In Our Circles – how does recognition like this make you feel?

GF: Err.. flattered.. very flattered.

LIS: Do you consider In Our Circles the best track to come out of Sydney in 2010?

GF: I couldn’t if I wanted to. There were A LOT of good songs to come out of Sydney in 2010, and for there to be a song that is better than all the others, seems a little silly.

LIS: What were your top tracks of last year?

GF: Sydney tracks, Jinja SafariForest Eyes, Cloud ControlGold Canary to name a couple. Internationally, YeasayerO.N.E, Crystal Castles featuring Robert SmithI’m Not In love and most songs of LCD Sound Systems last album.

LIS: Any tips for local Sydney bands to check out in 2011?

GF: No matter how good a gig is, if you get a parking ticket, it will always semi-ruin your night.

LIS: What’s next for Guineafowl? Are there any plans for an LP in the future?

GF: Many plans. We will start working on a LP after the EP is released and we have travelled as far around the country as we possibly can playing it. Until then though, all focus is directed towards our EP shows.

LIS: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

GF: Ever?

The John Steel Singers join Dew Process; announce new album

Posted in Australian Artists, New releases, News with tags , on August 19, 2010 by keelykov

Dew Process dew-process.com has announced they have snagged one of Australia’s most promising acts, The John Steel Singers. myspace.com/thejohnsteelsingers

The John Steel Singers are set to release their debut album Tangalooma through the label on November 5th 2010.

Inspired by Queensland’s bay area, Tangalooma enlisted the skills of Robert Forster of The Go-Betweens fame to take the production reigns.

“I first visited Tangalooma when I was three and I vividly remember seeing all of these huge rusted ships sitting out in this pristine tropical paradise.  It seemed very otherworldly, so much so when I was older I actually wasn’t sure that such a place even existed or if I had dreamt it up in my younger days. It’s also located in Queensland on Moreton Island not far from Brisbane which was very important to us as we wanted to make a Brisbane/Queensland album.  It really does seem to sum up the album and its themes in a visual sense,” says singer Tim Morrisey of the album title.

“Working with Robert was exactly as one might expect when working with their songwriting idol and mentor, surreal, brilliant and endlessly entertaining.  He’s a true gentleman and a source of much inspiration to everybody.  And he makes a mean pesto pasta.  And he still writes incredible songs,” says songwriter Scott Bromiley of the opportunity of work with one half of the The Go-Betweens.

The John Steel Singers join The Grates, Mumford & Sons, Sarah Blasko, Delta Spirit, Freelance Whales and a fruit basket more acts under the comforting wing of Dew Process.

“If there is still a space in this world for a creative, forward thinking, pop collective it will be occupied by The John Steel Singers for years to come. Their sound is as interesting and diverse as the band members themselves and this album is certainly a milestone for the Brisbane music scene and Robert Forster and the guys should rejoice in their efforts.  Dew Process are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with them,” says Managing Director of Dew Process, Paul Piticco.

Dew Process land Freelance Whales

Posted in International Artists, News with tags , on June 21, 2010 by keelykov

Dew Process have announced the signing of New York experimental pop five-piece Freelance Whales.

Freelance Whales met through a bashful ad on online messageboard Craig’s List posted by their frontman Judah Dadone simply saying “Would anyone like to interact with this sound, or be a part of it?” accompanied by a single track. 50 interviews and three months of schlepping across New York later, the band of multi-instrumentalists had formed with Kevin Read, Doris Cellar, Jake Hyman and Chuck Criss completing the circle.

Freelance Whales are not ones to follow the usual path of a band’s discovery. They play everything from theramin, to banjo, to glockenspiel, to watering can and anything else in between. Their first shows were busking on the streets of the Lower East Side, followed by a residency at Farm Colony – a dilapidated geriatric ward in Staten Island, where the chill of winter nights seeped in and ghosts were rumoured to haunt the grounds.

With their debut album, “Weathervanes”, completed, Freelance Whales had the New York crowd at CMJ all a flutter. The band inked a deal with a US indie label French Kiss/Mom & Pop, before Freelance Whales blew away SXSW and the Dew Process team and we welcomed them to the burgeoning fold.

“Weathervanes” is due out on Dew Process in September.
