DZ DEATHRAYS

Brisbane indie/thrash/punk two-piece, DZ, have changed their name to DZ DEATHRAYS. However, they are very much the same band, with Shane Parsons on vocals, Simon Ridley on drums and a whole lot of noise and strobes.

The name change, comes ahead of their plans to take on the US and UK scenes in a big way in 2011, but with the uprise in dubstep music comes the clash with long standing dubstep US DJ of the same name, ‘DZ’.

DZ DEATHRAYS (capitals – get it right when you text your friends) are set to take on the world with sets being announced at SXSW in Austin, Texas and at the Great Escape Festival in the UK.

While in the United States for SXSW, the boys will return to New York, a city they left trembling in their wake in late 2010, as well as take on the sunset strip in LA.

Confirmed US dates:
Wed 9th March @ Lit Lounge, NY
Fri 11th March @ Pianos, NY
Sun 13th March @ Delancey, NY
Sat 19th March @ Sick House Party, Austin (watch this space for more info)
15th-21st March @ SXSW, Austin

With more to be added.

And so on to The Great Escape festival in Brighton, UK. With the help of the QLD government, DZ DEATHRAYS will be heading to the UK (and possibly Europe) in May 2011. Stay tuned for more details to come.

A little closer to home, you can catch the DZ DEATHRAYS boys as they prep for their very soon be  released new release.

Catch them here:
Fri 18th Feb @ ‘Last Night’ Clubnight, Gaelic Theatre, Sydney
Sat 26th – Sun 27th March @ The Hills Are Alive Festival, South Gippsland, VIC

RIP DZ. Long live DZ DEATHRAYS

VIP Review:Foals @ splendour

Posted in News with tags , , on July 30, 2010 by keelykov

Foals played in the mix up tent where sun can’t hurt you and everything else seems like a dream.

Celebrity review: Shane Parsons of DZ.

Foals have this amazing sound of bright guitars on meth… I mean math.

The sound flooded over me. I wasn’t up the front but it was intense. Math metal needs to be appreciated here.

It’s intricate and It’s coordinated and the sound swells like an amazing ocean storm. Also I just had my leg pissed on.

My favorite band of the weekend so far.. What sounds like intricate pieces turns in to masterpieces. I am so biased because I love them.

Have a great weekend.

Curtains close. Far out.

DZ – Teeth

Posted in Australian Artists, Video with tags on April 7, 2010 by keelykov

It’s been a while coming, but DZ‘s spankin’ new video for Teeth is finally here!

Was it worth the wait? Hell Yeah. At the very core of this clip is the ultimate combination of Boobs, Longnecks and Fish Costumes. Set around their hometown of Brisbekistan (aka Brisbane), Teeth is a furious three minutes of dirty, throttling guitars, driving, hypnotic drums and furious lyrics.

Man, now I’m stinging for a beer.

You don’t play hide and go seek with FANS, that’s a fact. Everyone knows that.

The Lost Weekend mustn’t have been told, because this week its been hiding good and proper, so proper in fact that many considered it gone for good. Lost, without a trace.

But no, Fans didn’t give up. No, they searched high and low for that weekend, and BAM, as if by magic, they found it! (Our guess, is that it was behind the door, a simple, yet oh so effective hiding spot).

So now that they have found it, what are they going to do with it? Well, Party I guess.

Fans are putting on a show for Brisbane folk upstairs and down at Rosies, when they bring Lou Barlow, Hawnay Troof, DZ, Monotonix and a gaggle of other rad acts together for The Lost And Found Weekend.

Taking place on Sunday 7th March, starting at 5:30pm, the weekend will set you back a clean $35 pre-sale

Baton Down The Haches! Yacht Club DJ’s Ahoy!

Posted in News, Tours with tags , , on March 1, 2010 by keelykov

Crowd-pleasing mash-up duo the Yacht Club DJs are back after a string of manic music festival performances. Late last year, the pair took their infectious brand of sugar pop infused with hardcore, punk and hip hop mashes on the road, selling out their national Kleptomania Tour.

Heralded the saviours of the mash-up genre, this March the pair will emerge from playing underground club gigs and take their rightful place behind the decks in some of Australia’s foremost music venues.

Prepare to storm the stage as the Yacht Club DJs tear apart your favourite songs and smash them back together into a cleverly crafted remix.

And of course, a Yacht Club DJs show would not be complete without on-stage nudity, crowd invasions, dancing on the decks and wild water sports, including riding the waves of the crowd on an inflatable boat.

Ready to join the party is Brisbane monster duo DZ and young indie rockers Howl.

With a sound likened to The Bronx meets DFA 1979, DZ have turned heads with their refreshingly palatable gritty indie sound.

Triple J Unearthed High winners Howl have left the classroom, played summer festivals all over the country and released their debut EP, with their single Blackout receiving high rotation on Triple J. The fellow Ballarat act will promote their self-titled EP on the Batten Down the Hatches Tour.

DZ Ruined My Life, here’s proof.

Posted in News, Video with tags on March 1, 2010 by keelykov

Brisbane duo DZ have released a mini doco showcasing their live radical-ness and par-taying ways.

Created as an accompaniment to their 2009 EP ‘Ruined My Life’ the ten (and a half) minute clip delves into the tequila swilling world of DZ and the boys of Useless Art Records

The doco was edited by Noel Smyth the guy behind The Mess Up and Blue Blood clips.

The View w/ DZ @ The Metro

Posted in Gig, Reviews with tags , on January 14, 2010 by keelykov

05/01/10

Brisbane’s kings of the par-tay DZ opened with a new, as yet unnamed, song. Looking damn comfortable on the Metro’s stage, the duo’s punky thrash sound was massive, seeking out every face in the theatre and attempting to melt it off.

Under the veil of red light and their signature Strobe, DZ smashed out radio single Blue Blood, infectious Cops Capacity, Jager swilling Mess up and blood heating Two Lungs.

Set highlight was the tentatively named track Slow Burn, which shows a depth to both DZ’s musical and lyrical abilities. A pulsating song which emphasises the bands ability to make their crowds get down and groove, Slow Burn is a kick-arse, sexy track. If this is the direction DZ is heading, then we can expect (and demand) massive things from this two-piece.

Hailing from the Scottish town of Dundee, The View are five very tiny little men.

With the drummer stripping his shirt of immediately (much to the joy of female fans) and the keyboardist looking like he had travelled to the 90’s stolen Beastie Boys wardrobe and made it back in time for the metro show, The View were a mismatched, spry bunch of pixies. But those tiny men could make some noise!

Opening with Glass Smash from their most recent record Which Bitch, The View hurled through a set list including 5Rebeccas, Same Jeans & new single Temptation Dice, their live sound was fuller than their recorded material, though they did not stray too far from their albums musically. In between songs, it was hard to make out the banter of lead singer Kyle Falconer through his thick Scottish accent. The question remains, was he speaking English or Binary?

While the crowd down the front jumped around like mullet flinging themselves from danger during the entire set, but up the back, the crowd started to lose attention. It seemed that once the novelty of the polka pop wore off, the realisation that every song kinda sounded the same kicked in.

This seemed to be more a problem with the set order rather than the songs themselves. Playing five songs in a row all at the same high intensity and then switching to three songs in a row in more of an acoustic vein, was a bit of a crap move. I lost attention, and judging by the size of the bar queue, I’m assuming others did as well.

The View had no encore; instead, they finished with the rollicking Shock Shock Horror, which proved that boy (and the crowd) CAN dance.
