Will Magnus Guitar and Keys extraordinaire of Sydney band The Holidays took some time out of his (probably) busy day to talk to Lost In Suburbia about the Friday release of their long awaited debut album Post Paradise, changing their sound and wetting the bed on tour.
Lost In Suburbia: Congratulations on the release of your debut album Post Paradise. It’s been a long time coming. What’s taken so darn long to get an LP out?
Will Magnus: Thank you! It’s taken us a while to get the LP to where we wanted it, we really wanted to release something that we’re proud of, not just a bunch of old songs. We ended up recording, engineering and producing the album ourselves, which also added to the time its taken, as we didn’t have the constraints of time and money that you face in a studio!
LIS: How would you describe the mood of the album?
WM: We’d like to think the mood reflects the four of us. We were going for a kind of carefree & nonchalant, yet also direct and strongly determined feel. I think we’ve captured what we’re about, and personally I can see the four of us in the album, our four very different yet also very similar personalities and tastes! But in one sentence, the mood is like night time on the island.
LIS: You guys have shifted your sound since your last EP release, what caused you to move away from indie pop to the layered sound found on your new album?
WM: The first EP we released was probably the first 5 songs we ever wrote. We owned 2 guitars, a bass guitar and a drum kit between us, the indie set-up! Things happened very fast for us at first, and even by the time we had finished our second EP, we still didn’t have any real idea what we were doing in this game. Before we recorded the album, we really thought about what we wanted to portray as The Holidays, what our real influences are and what is really important to us. On another level, I guess it has been 2 years since our 2nd EP came out, and we’re not a band to sit still and keep churning out the same music over and over again, we like to push ourselves and our abilities and the way we work, so in the same way, I can’t imagine our next album sounding too similar to this one!
LIS: You’re heading out on tour to launch the new album, what kind of shenanigans are you hoping to get up to?
WM: Fortunately we’re a band that loves playing our songs to everyone as much as we love writing them! In the past our tours have been kind of X rated, and I can’t imagine this one being much different. The usual male-male nudity, bed wetting, and fast food diets will hopefully be supplemented with some great gigs!
LIS: For anyone who hasn’t been to one of your gigs yet, describe your live show.
WM: We all appreciate when bands try and add to their album tracks live, not just playing them as they were recorded. It would be virtually impossible for us to play our songs as they were recorded (unless we managed to bring steel drums, timpani’s, flutes, an orchestra and a choir on the road with us), but we feel like we have an energy live that adds to the songs. We’ve added a classically trained percussionist to the mix who wails on timbales and congas, and we’re all kept busy mixing it up between guitars and synths and miniature keyboards and whatever else we can lay our hands on.
LIS: Apart from releasing your Debut album, what has been 2010’s highlight?
WM: There is not much that can beat the satisfaction and excitement we feel releasing this album, it’s kind of been our life’s work. For the last 3 years anyway!
LIS: Where is the best place you have ever been on Holiday?
WM: I went to Japan last year which I absolutely loved! Really interesting people, unusual food and a great culture and atmosphere in all the cities! Hopefully we get a chance to go there with the band soon.
LIS: What’s the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
WM: Don’t fall through the trapdoor of thinking you have something to lose!
Post Paradise is out Friday 24th October through Liberation.
